about

"Resurrected Fields" (parts I to IV) was composed, or comprovised, on a Yamaha DX-7 during a summer when I was housesitting my parents' home in the Toronto suburb of Etobicoke. It's a vision of the climax and demise of industry, with something more organic arising out of its ashes. The reverberant sounds of "IV" are based in my memory of growing up in a neighborhood where one could still hear crickets, cicadas, and other critters against the velvety hum of factories and highways in the distance.

It is dedicated to the patch of woods (up the street) in which I played as a child until the day when it was sacrificed for real estate. It led to my first eco-action, involving the construction of a memorial on the land appropriated by the private buyer from what used to be a public wood, entering which felt to me like entering an enchanted otherworld.

"IV" and the latter part of "III" were featured on "Musicworks 64: Sound Ecology 3" alongside work by James Tenney (with whom I studied composition), Gayle Young, Paul Dolden, and others.

Tracks 4 and 5 here are bonus tracks, from a live electroacoustic performance by myself (as Vax) and the electronic duo VA (Viktor Shkavrytko and Bohdan Koval) at the Music Gallery, June 27, 1987, Toronto.
